Yesterday was my first day off in nine days. I took full advantage of it - and did yard work in between clinic visits! Today, I realize I should have rested . . . yawn!

Opps!
Two lab appointments yesterday. Two opps!
First Opps: I was getting a blood draw for my PMR. While I was waiting, I overheard the techs talking. "Well, I can't believe ______ is still working here. She makes so many mistakes." Wouldn't you know? When they went to draw my blood, I asked what doctor they were drawing for because I have two blood draws on order but I know one is in two months. They had the wrong doctor with the wrong order. I'm glad _______ is the only one there who makes mistakes!
Second Opps: I had a bone density scan. The person at the desk said to keep my paperwork when I finished filling it out and to give it to the tech when I was called. Well, I wasn't called and I wasn't called and I wasn't called. Finally, the tech came out and called my name, then asked, "Why didn't you turn your paperwork in at the desk? I would have called you sooner." "Hmmm . . . must have been told something different . . ."
Third Opps: I know I said there were only two, but as I drove home yesterday, I thought, "I could have scheduled these appointments together and only made one trip . . . "
Only at Sand Creek . . .
. . . can Sam run into a former student! That happened on Sunday when we hosted the eighth grade confirmation class from Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran. Wouldn't you know? She was in my group on the low ropes and high ropes, but Sam saw her first on the zip line.
It was a bit nippy weather-wise, but an over all just fun group!

Samory
Having grown up in a rural village in Guinea, Samory knew there was a slim chance he would be able to seek medical attention due to the cost, availability, and his own financial restrictions. His mother tried using traditional remedies to help the growing lump but to no avail. Samory’s tumour wasn’t slowing down, and each day it was more painful than the last.
‘The worst part was knowing that it was only going to get worse because there was nothing we could do,’ Samory said. ‘When I thought of my future, I was scared.’
But Samory didn’t always feel this way. Before he was forced to leave school due to the pain of his tumour, he looked forward to becoming a mathematics teacher one day; he was the only one in his family to attempt continuing his studies. But the people he thought were his friends cruelly declared that it was this ambition to better his life that in fact cursed his health.
‘People would mock my mother and tell her it was because she wanted more for me in life — that greed is why I was stuck with this tumour. I didn’t like to go out with her because of the negative attention it brought her,’ recalled Samory. ‘My mother loves many things and is a happy woman, but my condition brought her sadness.’
After the pain became too much to bear, Samory reluctantly made the journey to the capital city to seek help, even though he knew he could not afford it. But when he reached Conakry, he heard the good news he so desperately needed— a ship that would perform free surgeries had arrived in his home country! After being approved for surgery on the Africa Mercy to finally remove his painful tumour, Samory’s dreams for the future no longer seemed so distant.
Dressed to the nines, Samory arrived on the dock, thrilled to be taking his first steps toward a surgery that would replace his suffering with joy. ‘It’s amazing to me to think that years’ worth of pain will be taken away in just one day!’
Just one day later, Samory looked in the mirror and finally saw the smile he remembered before his tumour. He was free. Thanks to his courage, ambition, and the gift of safe, free surgery on the Africa Mercy, Samory’s dreams were rekindled! ‘I am looking forward to picking up my studies again so I can become a mathematics teacher, just like I wanted to be before the pain began. Life is good once again!’

The Choice.
I taught CPR-PR, First Aid and Emergency Oxygen Administration at the Y this morning to a very small group that only got smaller. We were doing adult CPR on the floor - because, after all, who could lift an unconscious adult up on a table to do CPR? One of the ladies, a very sweet lady, couldn't do the compressions at all. And I, being the evil instructor that I am (after all, my name IS on the card if we get audited!) said that she needed to be able to do CPR for a minimum of five consecutive cycles without stopping. She looked at me, smiled sadly, and said, "I guess I'll be going home." I offered her another opportunity to start over and she choose to leave. Honestly, I prefer that choice over me telling her she was not going to pass . . .
Brother-by-Another-Mother
Every since Matt was four-years-old, his very best friend has been our neighbor, Corey. The last few months, since Matt has been working nights and has a girlfriend, they haven't gotten together much . . . until last night!
Matt took Annie for a walk and NEVER. CAME. BACK. About the time Micah was getting into her car to go look for Matt, she found he and Corey talking outside Corey's house.
Since Friday's supper is always soup, she brought both boys home to a delicious meal of soup, cinnamon rolls, love and laughter! It was so good to have our brother-by-another-mother home for the evening . . .

Thankful Thursday!
Just before I left work today, I heard via the grapevine that our Aquatics Director at the Y, Noah, resigned effective May 10. When I got home, I found the "official" e-mail. Fortunately, Noah had shared what was going down with him when we worked together on Monday night so I wasn't totally caught by surprise like a majority of our staff were/are/will be. I just didn't think he was going to hear until next week if he got the job so he's leaving sooner than I expected. I was hoping for June 4 so we could teach one last CPR-PR class together. But that's just not to be . . .
So on this "Thankful Thursday", I want to say "Thank you" to Noah for all the times he helped me with CPR - from getting more and better equipment to literally cleaning manikins with me - all much appreciated.
I also want to say I am thankful for the time we got to spend together. I have enjoyed working with him and wish him nothing but the best as he moves on . . .
Take Your Hubby to Work Week
That's what we're designating this week at Sand Creek! Our course manager Anna's husband worked his first day every at Sand Creek yesterday. He's in training to be an electrician and he's fine sticking with that course of action (translation: he's okay NEVER coming back)! My hub is coming out on Sunday for a large church group. Unfortunately, it's too close to finals week for several of our college students, so we're running with a skeleton crew. Since Sam is willing to come when we're desperate, he'll be there with Anna and I! After all, it is take your hubby to work week, right?
Only at Sand Creek . . .
We had the Jordan High School Boys and Girls Track Teams out at Sand Creek yesterday. Like they said, best afternoon weather-wise they've ever had! Unfortunately, both Deanna and I agreed - the weather was excellent, but it wasn't our best afternoon ever. Somehow, we got the tough-to-lead groups - Groups B and E. As we talked about it later, we determined that some of the "coaches" doubled up and our two groups were without Jordan High School Staff leadership. Hmmm . . .makes you wonder, doesn't it?

The Saddest Easter Egg Hunt Ever
Al and Sheryl, who own the land Sand Creek is on, had colored a dozen eggs for their two young grandsons to find outside this morning on an Easter egg hunt. Al and his dog, Rosa, hid the eggs while Sheryl helped the boys find baskets and get ready to go outside. Only . . .
Rosa saw where Al hid the eggs and she had eaten eight of them before Al caught her! Sounds like a lab to me!
The happy news? I didn't even have to hunt for an Easter egg today. When I left this evening, Sheryl came over to my car with a large Reeses peanut butter egg! That was as good as the tips we received!

. . . Can you be scooping snow off the platforms one week and be zipping in shorts the next week!
We had a lovely morning working on our debriefing skills at the low ropes course. It was just seven staff and three elements, but we all felt like we learned a lot.
This afternoon, it was two groups of zippers followed by a family of five who did the high ropes course and zip line. It was a beautiful afternoon filled with fun-loving people! Best part of all? Ethan and I each received $35.00 in tips!

Thankful Thursday!
You've heard it before and I'm going to say it once again, I like my doctor! On this "Thankful Thursday", I met with him for the annual thyroid/cholesterol check. I went in tired and walked out with a smile. I'm thankful:
- That while my cholesterol was over 250, my cholesterol ratio was 2.something - too low to be on meds! I have amazing good cholesterol!
- That my thyroid dose will be changed and my energy should return soon!
- That I was correct in my self-care for costochondritis. I got that diagnosis in January from my rheumatologist who wanted me to see my internist who agreed with me today!
- That my PMR is improving. Last year at this time, my SED rate was a whopping 77. This month it's down to 9 and I'm down to 7 mg of Prednisone, soon to be six!
- That Metamucil comes in pill form. You can figure that one out on your own says the ex-runner who can no longer run!
- That I no longer have to take the baby aspirin I was taking after my knee surgery.
Not the brightest light . . .
Tuesday night at the Y, I had a staff tell me, "I just tested this student and he's a Level One." My response? "Good, because you ARE teaching a Level One class." Oh, my - seriously? Did you not check the schedule?

Pink and Blue . . .
At the Y, we give out blue wristbands for the leisure pool to children who have passed a fairly simple swim test. Children who past a much more difficult swim test can get a pink wrist band for the lap pool.
Last night someone at the front desk was giving out pink wristbands to the girls and blue wristbands to the boys. Opps!
Noah caught it quick and switched it back to blue for the leisure pool . . .

It could have been worse . . .
There are stories to tell and there are stories to tell. Today's is one of the best!
While walking Annie today, I saw neighbor K. outside. I asked, "Ya'll have that baby yet?" Oh, my goodness did they ever . . .
K. proceeded to tell me that K.'s (yup, both names start with K!) water broke shortly after they put their two-year-old to bed Thursday night. You might remember Thursday night - we were having a bit of snow and sleet and the roads were a tad icy . . . Anyway K's (the father) mom made it over in ten minutes flat to watch the two-year-old and off they went to Abbott where K., the mum, works as a nurse.
When they hit the road construction on 35W, there was debris in the road and it took a chunk out one of the tires. As K. pulled off the road, K. had a baby right there in the front seat of the car. Remember, she is a nurse. Three highway patrol cars, one police car, an ambulance and as K., the mum said, "All male. Not a woman there to help me." She basically told them, as they opened the car door and let it sleet on her and the newborn, "Just put me in the ambulance. We'll deal with the birthing stuff when we get there."
Of course, when they got there all the baby rooms were full, but since they were no longer delivering, they were put in a C-section room where mum and baby were both declared healthy.
Total amount of time: Forty minutes from when the water broke until they arrived at the hospital.
Unfortunately, the highway patrol had the car towed - after all, it was in a road construction zone - to an impound lot where for approximately $300.00 K. got his car back yesterday. Fortunately, it had been cool enough outside that, while it was a mess, there was no afterbirth stench. And we all know what K. cleaned today - his car!
Meanwhile, the baby is beautiful . . .

Yesterday did we need to scoop snow off of all three platforms before we could zip! Not to mention, scoop snow out of the Welcome Center! But was it worth it? Most definitely!

"My, oh, my, what a wonderful day!"

No Power!
Sure enough, when the power went out yesterday, my children were both home - and at a loss as to what to do! Seriously!
I said, "Sit in front of a window and read a book."
I guess I was the only one who liked that idea. So my ideas got better . . . the oldest scooped the drive and the youngest cleaned her room! Electricity is so over-rated anyway . . .
Thankful Thurday!
To all of those who are NOT enjoying our Minnesota weather right now - it sure made my Thursday thankful! I pulled in to the Y this morning and no one - I mean empty parking lot no one - was there! I was the only person in the lap pool swimming for a good portion of my time! Four lanes to myself!
Add to that my first class with two students - only one showed up. My next class with five students - zero! My last class with four students - one came. And I am so thankful he came. He was the Level 4 in a class that included students who were Levels 3, 4, and 5 which meant he was truly the most ignored student in the class. But today - he got my full attention and I loved it . . . on a snowy thankful Thursday in Minnesota!

Happy National Sibling Day!
To all of you siblings out there . . .
HAPPY NATIONAL SIBLING DAY!
And to think, my children are telling me they like
their blue-eyed siblings best!
Subbing . . .
Our Bible study table leader is taking the next two weeks off to be with her mom who just had hip replacement surgery out-of-state. I, in a moment of insanity, which was totally confirmed by this line in our Bible study, "Our passage this week contains one of the most difficult texts in the New Testament . . .", agreed to fill in for her!
I come before you now to tell you that God IS SO faithful! We had the most amazing, delightful time together and I really enjoyed myself. To God be the glory!
Live . . .
. . . like someone left the gate open
That was my "Q Card" for Bible study today and I love it! Think of the wonder and joy and abandonment that comes with that gate being open. Oh, the places you can go! So, live . . . like someone left the gate open!

Day-Glo Red!
The first thing Sam said to me this morning was, "Wow! Is your face ever red!"
The first thing Steven the lifeguard said to me this morning was, "Wow! Are you ever sunburned!"
I am a lovely day-glo red! Neon even! I got a cortisone in my "good" knee on Tuesday. You don't even have to guess what one of the side effects of a cortisone shot is, do you?
Tomorrow . . . maybe it'll be gone! Until then, it hurts! And no, I'm not whining. I'm stating a fact. Amen!
Thankful Thursday!
"Thankful Thursday!" actually began on Tuesday. I received a call from my doctor's office that the appointment I had scheduled for April 17 had to be rescheduled. The same appointment that I had already rescheduled from April 16 and actually scheduled back in January. Unfortunately, my doctor was booked through late July. Would I like to see one of the other doctor's at the clinic?
Ummm . . . No. I had already booked this appointment - twice. I have been with this doctor for close to thirty years! I had his sons in swimming lessons! Our sons played soccer against each other! NO!
But I felt called to pray about it, rather than return a ranting phone call. Wednesday morning, I got the God nudge, "Send an e-mail", which I did later that afternoon.
In it, I shared the two reasons I wanted to see him besides the "annual checkup". I said that if he felt those two items were not pressing, I would have no problem waiting until July to get together. However, if he felt they needed to be addressed sooner, which one of his co-workers would he recommend me seeing? And then I asked that he would personally respond to me.
Seriously, I had no sooner hit the "Send" button and walked up stairs and the phone rang. Fairview Clinics. It was my doctor's nurse. She has the power to schedule appointments. Would I like to see my doctor at 9 a.m. or 4 p.m. on April 18? I gratefully took the 4 p.m. and thanked her profusely!
I came down this morning to a personal e-mail from my doctor, apologizing for his crazy schedule - he's doing a special project for Fairview and it's taking up a lot of his time, more than he likes. But he was glad his nurse was able to get me in and he was looking forward to seeing me! Definitely a Thankful Thursday!
