It's been the buzz . . .

On the ship since we arrived - the new crew medical policies!  The most talked about has been the weight restrictions, but the one I was most concerned about was "allergies".  A fellow crew member sent me the information.  This is it:

3. Definitions of conditions likely unfit for service aboard the AFM

3.1. Allergies

3.1.1. Food allergies

3.1.1.1. Peanut - Need to be aware that ship is not peanut-free. Medical contract recommended

3.1.1.2. Other - Need to be aware that ship cannot accommodate special diets of any kind. Off-ship food resources are not considered reliable.

3.1.2. Prior anaphylaxis or other severe allergic reaction requiring hospitalization - Depending on severity may be automatic denial.

3.1.2.1. If approved, must bring 2 Epi-Pens and will be responsible for replacement

3.1.2.2. Will need to return home if anaphylaxis occurs on board

3.1.2.3. Medical contract required

What does that mean for us as a family?  Well, I talked to the crew doctor yesterday and he was more stringent than the policy.  If Micah's pediatrician says that she will go into anaplylaxis if she comes in contact with peanuts (which he says she will), she can no longer serve on Mercy Ships - with no regard to the fact that she has successfully served FIVE times and has NEVER had a reaction!  All I can say is this leaves me very sad, but my God is bigger than policies and if He wants us to serve overseas with Mercy Ships, He can do it again.  Let this summer be a testimony and a reminder of His faithfulness.  After all, Matt is the only fifteen year old who has ever been granted permission to work full-time on the ship and live on Deck 4!

We went to a lovely pool today . . .

The island we swam to . . .

The opera house we parked by . . .

The zero depth entry . . .

Beautiful landscaping . . .
After being in Africa where showing your knees was considered being "sexy", we had culture shock today!  Speedos, thongs, topless - we saw it all!  Poor Matt is scarred for life!  Fortunately, the swimming was great!

There's a lovely park . . .

In Tenerife that the crew calls the "Big Park".  When we're not there it looks like this . . .

After 45 minutes . . .

Of hiking we arrived and had just a fun time!

I scream, you scream . . .

We had to get ice cream!  When the temperature gauge showed 41*C (around 105*F), we knew a quick stop at Burger King would help us make it back to the ship!

The Train Park

We had our first walking field trip with the kids today to the train park.  It took us 45 minutes to walk there and only 40 minutes to walk home!  Tomorrow, we're walking even further!

Matt on the train!

Matt & Rebeckah playing with the kids!

Emma making Elsa's mom very unhappy!

Land Ho (with pictures!)

Here we are on land - at last!

No McDonald's for us - we're at the meter bar!  Everything served is a meter long!

Yum!  One meter of pizza!

Matt and friends OUTSIDE of McDonald's!

My son is so strong . . .

He can hold a land rover in one hand!

Land Ho!

About 2:15 p.m. yesterday, we got word - the pilot was on board the ship - and about an hour later, we pulled in to port!

We thought we'd be at the end of the pier . . .

The road into town . . .
Around 3:45 p.m. yesterday, they turned the engines off.  At 5:00, we had a country briefing and by 5:30, we were given shore leave.  At that point, we had been on board the ship ten days and 7 1/2 hours.  It took us just ten more minutes to get off the ship!

We'll be taking the kids down the road into town - yes, walking! - the next three days!  It didn't seem long last night.  I wonder how it'll be today . . .

Oh, Captain . . .

Yesterday at 4:00 p.m.. the captain announced that the ship would be doing some turning maneuvers as well as a man overboard drill.  Batten down the hatches because we would be rolling!  I don't think he knew we had our parent night scheduled for 4:15!  We rocked, we bounced, we tipped - we survived!  Here's our crew later out on the bow:

Worship on the Bow . . .

Was quite lovely last night!  Take a look see . . .

Musicians . . .

Look close and you can see "Dronnig Ingrid" - the ship's original name

THREE

Engine three is being turned off this morning.  It's leaking water and it shouldn't be.  The engineer I spoke with said we can easily sail with just three engines.  In fact, we're hoping to sail into Tenerife by three tomorrow!

Sail Olympics!

I volunteered to help with the "Sail Olympics" yesterday afternoon.  Each team came to my area and tried to determine what the fifteen smells were.  I kid you not - every crew member who lived on Decks 3 and 4 got this one right:

Toilet juice!  We have the privilege of putting 25 ml of Blackwater Treatment down our toilets every day!  If you miss, there's a distinct odor that comes . . .

While you were sitting down to lunch . . .

I was sitting down in the Queen's Lounge up on Deck 7 with some of the single female crew.  They had invited four of the moms to come and share with them and answer questions they had on marriage, waiting, dating, finding the right man, praying for a husband, etc.  It was such a refreshing and encouraging time for me because the crew I'm in charge of does not have the same heart for God as these young women do - and I needed to see that there were singles on board who knew Jesus was their only hope!

News from home . . .

Congratulations to Micah and her soccer team for taking the Lakeville City Championship in their age group on June 9.  Well done!

Keeping with that "M" theme . . .

We made magnets this morning!

There's just something about kids and Jell-o . . .

We called it "Messy Mr. Wiggle"!

Capture the Flag!

I have played "Capture the Flag" in the mountains, in the valleys and now on the Atlantic Ocean!  We went up to Deck 7 and just had a blast!

Only in the Atlantic Ocean . . .

Can you call a "Dolphin Break" in the middle of "Capture the Flag"!

The dolphins would be the gray blobs in the middle of the pictures!

In the end . . .

We sent them home looking like this - messy, dirty and happy!
